What is the difference between Disc Golf & Beach or Recreational Play?

Disc Golf

Disc Golf is played much like traditional golf, with shots thrown from a desingated 'tee' area, toward distant baskets (holes) numbered 1 to 9, or 1 to 18. Instead of golf clubs, you use golf discs called Driver, Midrange & Putter that are usually a flatter shape than recreational discs, and of a harder plastic.

As you progress toward the basket, you play your next shot from where the previously thrown disc landed, or take a 1-stroke penalty if you have to lay-out. The scoring system is the same as regular golf; each disc golf hole has a pre-determined number of throws to get into the basket to achieve a Par (3 Par, 4 Par, etc). Like regular golf, the lowest score wins, and the score-titles are the same (Ace = Hole in one; Birdie = 1 under par; Par = Even; Eagle = 1 over par; Double Eagle = 2 over par).

The disc golf course can be a designed public course, or one you set up yourself (see our Permanent and Portable baskets).

Beach or Recreational Play - Frisbees

Just have fun. No set rules except to throw and catch, and to always respect your surroundings. Beach and Recreational frisbees are for everyone of any skill - adults, children and dogs (although you usually need at least one human to throw the Frisbee ). The shape is more full than a golf disc, and in a more pliable plastic. Beach and Recreational Frisbees are the same.

Which Discs are considered Disc Golf discs?

Discraft Golf Discs, Innova Golf Discs, 150 Class Golf Discs, and some of the dyed, glow, and lighted discs (for night-time play).

What does the 150 Class mean?

It's a weight of 150 grams for that class of discs, and is used for disc golf. Contact Us and Helix will help you. info@helixdiscgolf.com, or 707.272.2263

I'm confused by the different plastics and weights - I don't know which discs to choose?

One of my first mistakes as a beginner was to purchase a 'Maximum Distance Driver' thinking it would go further. What I discovered is that it is harder to throw straight and at first didn't go as far as some of the less-distance drivers.

I love this game and have played for years and will be happy to help you get started, too, so don't hesitate to ask.
